It's been a great year at The Optionist. We've featured more than 250 different books, news articles, podcasts and graphic novels. For the end of the year, I thought it worthwhile to resurface a dozen option-worthy — and still available! — stories you might have missed.
Some of my favorites from this year include a true crime tale about a teacher who ran a drug ring; the face-off between a crusading young DA and a crime boss out West; a story about male middle schoolers who outed their pervy teacher; a throwback superhero tale featuring an Asian-American lead;a news story that could be the basis for Buffy-meets-The-West Wing; two classic novels now in the public domain; and the chess scandal over whether a rising star cheated (and the unbelievably icky way he might’ve done it). Substack featured that story in one of its weekly “Substack reads” picks, and it became one of the platform’s 10 most-read stories of the year. Look no further for your holiday reading list.
